It's a New Year!

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.
Staring Into the Abyss
So several of my fellow bloggers have been posting retrospectives and New Year's resolutions. I will be writing my anniversary post in a couple weeks, so I don't want to steal my own thunder on that. But while for several years running I have shunned the resolution bandwagon, I think I may just jump on and see what happens. Ironically, while I had it in mind to write this yesterday, I managed to break at least one of my yet-to-be-written resolutions already. How's that for a January 2nd?

I will post every day.

The Aggronaut has been writing a post day since late April. While I have known Belghast since the early days of Rift, I was only dimly aware that he had a blog prior to about May or June. I have read his posts religiously since then, and decided yesterday that I would resolve to write every day this year, as well. Of course, you can look at my blogging record and see that that didn't happen. I spent pretty much all day doing stuff with my lovely bride, Scooter, and was pretty beat by bedtime. So, from here on out, I resolve to write a blog post every day. I have a feeling most of them will be crappy, but hopefully it will prepare me for my next resolution. . .

I will complete a novel during National Novel Writing Month.

I tried doing NaNoWriMo for about three years prior to 2013, but honestly never got very far, due to circumstances both within and beyond my control. I skipped the event this past November, other than cheering other folks on. This year, I plan to plan ahead, scheduling both time during my day to write, and developing a good plot outline, etc., for use during the event itself. Something else that will probably help with my fiction writing . . .

I will read more.

I used to be an avid novel reader, but that has dropped in recent years, partly because every time I go to buy a book, I tell myself I should be using that time to write a book. But that never really happens. I still read quite a bit, but it is usually short articles on the internet, on my phone. I can't how many I will get to, but I'd like to make this a priority. But I can't sit on my butt all year . . .

I will get healthier.

I follow several bloggers who game but also have been working on their fitness and doing non-sedentary activities. While I have been encouraging them, I have not gotten serious about doing the same for myself. While I have not reached my peak weight again, I have been trending in the wrong direction these past couple months and need to do something about it. This one will require assistance from my beloved Scooter, as we share meal choices, but it really is up me whether I get healthier this year. So there it is. But, it won't be all work for Jack. I want to have some fun, too. . .

I will play stuff.

Duhhh, this is a MMO blog. Unlike some others, I am not big on structuring my gaming time. I obviously have goals from session to session, but nothing right now leaps out as "NYR" level stuff. I'd like to finish out the TSW ability wheel on at least one of my characters, but that comes as part of playing the game. I'm pretty sure I want to stake my claim in EQN Landmark. But I thought Rift's dimensions would be fun, too, and I only ended messing with that for about a month. Since I'm not "seriously" playing any other games right now, and I'm not really sure what new games I'll end up playing as they come out, this  last one is really vague. I'll be playing it by ear, like always.

What do you have planned for this glorious new year?

  1. Sounds good, except for the first one. If you have something to post every day, and the reason you haven't is because of laziness, work, gaming, etc, then by all means, get to work on posting! If you don't have anything to post, and are just posting to post, then don't do it. I hate when websites don't really have any worthy content, and just post crap.

    1. I will freely admit that it won't always be interesting to everyone. But I have enjoyed Belghast's daily reporting on his gaming and other activities, so I seek to emulate that.

  2. He does have a great blog that has a very casual life/gaming theme to it.

As a personal trainer I advise you to take it slow with changing diet. Most people fail because they go bonkers for a week or 2. That said, your heath should be the most important thing for you and your family. People around you love you and being healthy is important so you can enjoy the time with them.

I wish the best of luck to you and I'd be happy to hear about your journey through 2014.

    1. Thanks, man. We're looking at healthy options, more fish for example. Like you said, it has to be sustainable.

  3. Writing a post every day.. Oh god I've tried that before and ended up SO burned out. D: I'd like to join you on that one but history deems it bad for me! We shall see. I have just de-Christmassed my blog, however. Woohoo!

    1. Well, we'll see how it goes. It's partly a run-up to NaNoWriMo. I figure if I can keep the commitment to post every day, I'll have no problem writing 50,000 words in November.

  4. All right, remind me to be sooooo annoying this November for NaNo. I will bug you every day about your word count! This will be fun! :D

And where is the fifth person in your screenie!? You have no one doing the gangnam style dancing!

    1. We ran it with just the four. l-r Exceeder (Galactrix), LoneStarBelle (me), Ocholivis (BigMikeyOcho), and Gigabyte.

As for NaNo, I def need a plan beyond simply writing 1600 words a day.
