For new shiny game to be good, ...No, you can't. For new shiny game to be good, WoW must be bad. For Star Trek to be good, Babylon 5 must be bad. There is only One True Correct Answer in any fan discussion, and heresy must not be tolerated. I'm not sure if this all stems from a fear that there aren't enough fans to go around to support everything, or whether some geeks have been kicked so many times that they defensively have to convince themselves that what they like is "cool" and that it's the people who disagree with them who are outsiders and "wrong".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-88237768780011281532013-10-23T16:53:31.882-05:002013-10-23T16:53:31.882-05:00I do not disagree that there are nuances. But having been immersed in several MMOs to endgame in the past 7 years, I can honestly say that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Many of these mechanics did not originate with WoW or even with computer games. But WoW is a common foundation for a huge number of MMO gamers. To denigrate a new game for not being WoW is not helpful. (If the chat were full of "FFXIV is way better than WoW," I doubt the complaints would be coming from the same quarter.) But for finding a common frame of reference to understand new experiences, which is the point of my post, WoW is perfect.

FWIW, I like electronica, but couldn't distinguish most sub-genres. Thanks for contributing to the discussion. :)rowanblazehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820814610269599162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-68801265787613947162013-10-23T16:02:55.891-05:002013-10-23T16:02:55.891-05:00This discussion reminds me a lot of a discussion I...This discussion reminds me a lot of a discussion I had with a friend of mine about ten years ago about electronica music.

Him: "It all sounds the same, just electronic noise."
Me: "Nonono, it's totally different. Drum & Bass is nothing like Liquid Trance."
(Substitute metal in the 80s, or Rock & Roll in the 60s, or Jazz in the 30s)

It comes down to at a high level, where somebody who isn't immersed in a given subject, it does all look and sound the same because they don't understand the nuances, and that's also okay, because there ARE a lot of similarities as you point out. You have a holy trinity, then you have a baseline set of genre expectations. It's why genres even exist.

But when you start to dig into the nuances, the smaller differences (like in FFXIV there's no taunt, WoW there is) really start adding up and making the experience quite a bit different to those immersed in the experience.Talarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17684944568000522986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-4322559967755012702013-10-23T13:53:44.145-05:002013-10-23T13:53:44.145-05:00Sweet, thanks. Unfortunately, Munchkins seem to dominate MMO discussions.

I don't really understand the zero-sum thing, though I do see it in certain other genres (DC vs. Marvel; Star Wars vs. Star Trek). Can't I like different games for different reasons?rowanblazehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820814610269599162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-834275436484407582013-10-23T13:29:49.991-05:002013-10-23T13:29:49.991-05:00Every game seems to have the "this is not WoW...Every game seems to have the "this is not WoW, because WoW sucks (and this game doesn't)" people in chat. I think this is mostly from people who played a lot of WoW and got burned out, and find the new game more fun for whatever reason. Some people see entertainment as a zero-sum thing, so the new game must be praised and the older games must be slammed.

As for "wipe", I head the term in tabletop gaming before I heard it in MMOs. "Party wipe" was when the whole party got killed. Probably from "wipeout" as Magson says above, but I think that's where the MMO term came from.Psychochildhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06066038436696697892noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-46782080625446882082013-10-23T11:51:32.814-05:002013-10-23T11:51:32.814-05:00hahahahahahahahaha . . . . wwwipeout! ♪♫ Dunadunad...hahahahahahahahaha . . . . wwwipeout! ♪♫ Dunadunadun . . . ♪♫rowanblazehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820814610269599162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4765136501328523372.post-79048280830621176012013-10-23T11:36:15.451-05:002013-10-23T11:36:15.451-05:00It's a wipe becuz you got wiped out. ;-)
