Rants, ruminations, and rambling remarks from my mad, muddled, meandering mind.

I haven't been keeping up with the post-a-day schedule. I have reasons; but they're mostly excuses, I suppose. For one thing, I haven't really been playing any since Sunday. And my current assignment at work just has me exhausted at the end of the day. I bounced out of bed and got some things accomplished yesterday, but today I am really dragging.

I have been reading blogs, and some even inspire ideas. But I don't feel like I have time to develop them. I am wondering how to do both a daily post and still find time to do an in-depth post once or twice a week. When I first announced my intention to post everyday, at least one friend said he would prefer quality over quantity. But as I pointed out to him, part of the reason I gave myself this goal was to develop the habit of writing something every day, even if it's not fine literature, so I can power through NaNoWriMo this November. However, I begin to see his point. It seems I don't have time (or energy) for the deep posts when I am trying (and failing) to come up with daily topics.

I guess I'll renew my efforts to get something down in the morning, and see if there is time and energy for more meaty stuff after work.

  1. No matter what you do keep up the great writing. You do a great job

  2. I swear something is in the air, because post-Christmas I have been dragging ass. Constantly tired and simply worn down. Maybe it is all the cold weather.

  3. Its all good. I've been there before myself. Just don't burn yourself out on the blog trying to force the writing issue.

  4. I wasn't trying to discourage you from writing something every day. I was trying to discourage you from sharing it every day, for two reasons. Goals are supposed to be fun. I know writing can be hard, but you don't want to add guilt on top of it. If the guilt causes you to do more to make up for it, then that's great. If you are like me, it just causes me to want to do it less. The second reason, is content. If you are writing just to meet a daily quota, you may not have a good idea everyday. It is possible to have something everyday, but that typically involves creating stuff weeks or months in advance to allow some flexibility in missing days. I think it could end up being like the news. There really doesn't need to be 24 hour coverage from multiple news companies like there is. I barely catch the news, live tv news at least, but when I do it's always boring and repetitive. I'd hate for your content to be boring or repetitive just because you are forcing yourself to write and post every day. I'd rather you were writing on bigger posts and polishing them through out the week, than forcing stuff. Now, if you have a great topic or story, that's not to say you can't post daily. Or that posting daily necessarily means it will be boring and repetitive. If you have the content to write about, and the only thing stopping you is sitting down and writing it every day, then get your ass to work! You don't skip brushing your teeth or taking a shower because you are tired. Make it a habit and you won't have to find time for it.

*disclaimer - I don't have a successful blog by any measure. I don't write on a regular basis. I don't usually know what I'm talking about.

  5. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement, everyone. :)

  6. This depends on what you're content to post on your blog, If you have a vision of a very polished piece every time you post, trying to keep to a daily schedule may not be a good idea.

However, if your goal is just to test the waters and try something new and keep to a goal/routine, there's always starting small.

Think of a topic, write three sentences about it, share a quick opinion or an ironic statement, post a screenshot with caption, a short poem, whatever. Leave your commenters to fill in the gaps. :)

Or brainstorm some ideas/topic up beforehand in preparation for the dry days...

Just some thoughts if you're still keen on trying out the new habit.
