The Scarybooster Challenge

So I am writing this post from the comfort of my Tempurpedic Swedish Sleep System (a temperature-sensitive memory foam bed). While that, in and of itself, may not be that unusual, the tool I am using to post is. At least, it is for me.
Scarybooster has been posting on various blogs for several years now, always from his smartphone. It used to be an iPhone, but I believe he switched to Android a while ago. The man spins awesome posts, parables, and more from a screen I sometimes struggle to just read from, much less compose on. Heck, he even wrote a novel for NaNoWriMo on his iPhone a couple years ago. That he has that kind of patience is amazing to me.

Last night, with the exception of the pictures which I uploaded from my laptop, I followed suit and typed up my Lyra post on my phone. Tonight, it's completely phone based.

And that is my challenge to you, Dear Reader. If you're participating in Blaugust (already quite an undertaking), I challenge you to write at least one post on a mobile device (virtual keyboards only). It can be about whatever you want, of course. Just mention at some point during the post that you are writing it using a smartphone or tablet. And ping me on Twitter or Anook so I can make sure I read it.

Sorry, no prizes, just the satisfaction of knowing that if inspiration strikes, you don't have to be at a computer to post.

If you're interested in joining the circadian sun showers of Blaugust, breeze on over to Belghast's Blaugust Initiative Page on Anook and let him know you're there. It may even mean a small windfall for you, as Belghast has prizes prepared for high achievers.

The mobile version also loses some of the original character of the piece due to simplified formatting.

  1. I use my iPad to make notes for future blog posts and write comments all the time, but I found myself getting annoyed with the virtual keyboard when it came time to expanding out those notes into longer form sentences.

Ended up picking up a portable Bluetooth keyboard to preserve my sanity.

It takes slightly more prep time to remember that I plan to do some writing on a mobile device and bring it along, but it can link to my Android phone or the iPad and I can type out stuff comfortably on the couch or bed or at Starbucks or wherever.

    1. I understand your annoyance. My SwiftKey takes up almost half the screen on my phone. But that's part of the challenge! ;-)

  2. I tend to use my iPad and iPhone to write more posts so I can do it from the comfort of my own bed or wherever. Because its so small I can just move around and blog wherever. It can be a nightmare device though - I pick up on so many errors that a laptop would pick up and not my phone. Not to mention it takes twice as long because I hate the apps

    1. I am the same way about the Blogger app. Scarybooster himself mentioned that it ate his post the other day. And I lost half a post (the middle of a pic href!) in 2012. I use the Blogger web interface in Chrome on my phone. When I use the phone at all. It's not optimal, but I've yet to lose anything I type that way.

As I mentioned above I use the SwiftKey virtual keyboard, and recommend it highly.

  4. If you go to my blog you'll see, or lack of see, there are no pictures. The Blogger App breaks everytime I try to post a picture.

I actually have a horrible time writing a blog post on a regular computer. Yes I have grammer problems and sometimes my story goes South, but I have a great time writing.

Oh and thanks for the plug :) I should write something today!

    1. Suit yourself. I know not everyone has a smartphone or tablet. Typing on my phone is annoying, but not impossible.
